Yeah, man. Been waiting for a smoking/writing essay and didn’t know it. When a novel or short story of mine stalls on me, I wrap it in foil and put it back on the smoker. Works every time. Happy brisketing!!!
Love your post! Stalling on selling The Moon Tavern. Seems like it's starting to warm up, but we'll see. Writing the second in the series, and as long as I can stay out of Mpls and stay in Ely, I won't stall. I'll have second thoughts, think what I've written is all crap, but I'll finish that first draft and turn that crap into something one might want to eat.
I've thought of it as "hitting the wall." It's almost predictable in novel drafts. I get around 50 pages and I get the first one. About every 50 pages thereafter.
Your brain is probably working hard! I've heard that. Only your fingers are on a break.
A. Thanks for the shout out! I am stalling writing my own substack right now by reading yours! 🧡
B. Nola great food town!
C. How was the brisket?
Looking forward to the stalled Stack.
I brought home a TON of shrimp, bought fresh (frozen for the trip home). Plus catfish and flounder.
Ha, there was no brisket! It was a metaphorical brisket. I haven’t busted out the smoker yet this summer, but soon…
Man, I’m stalling hard on the Deer book right now. Writing a million short stories, sure, but STALLLLLLLING hard on the main agenda.
God damn my friend, I love your writing. That brisket number was, just chefs kiss!
Yeah I wrote this instead of working on my book today. Still stalling.
This was a wild ride. 😂

Try butcher paper, too. Cheers!
I'm just here to claim first comment.
Have not even read the piece. Heck, I may not.
Started reading Joshua Moehling's most recent novel. Pretty good so far.
I know. Dumbass.
I don't know who Moehling is.
He lives in the cities. Rural cop procedurals.
