The big news of the week is that I have achieved another literary dream: a short story collection with Cowboy Jamboree Press, coming in 2025. I’ve admired CJ and Adam VanWinkle for a long time, and have been really excited to see the magazine and a few anthologies pick up my lowly stories (and one of them went on to be included in Best American Mystery & Suspense), so I crossed my fingers and sent a whole batch of them, hoping they’d meet Mr. Editor-in-Chief’s high expectations. And they did. So watch for The Ticks Will Eat You Whole in the first half of ‘25, most likely.
Here’s a pic of a tick.
I also have a story in the latest issue of Mulkeskinner Journal, called “Strays.” It landed on the website at the tail-end of 2023, but if you missed it, here’s another chance to take a look. Very cool journal. A perfect home for the piece.
And two new acceptances! A return to the pages of Brandon Barrow’s gloriously pulpy Guilty Crime Stories mag. My story “A Skull Full of Solyanka” will land in issue 10, and one of my creepier stories, “The Blind Girl,” is headed to fan-favorite (awesome zine) The Hooghly Review.
Not to mention (but I will) the forthcoming pieces in Bull: Men’s Fiction, Red-Headed Writing (Willie Nelson antho), Sundown (Gordon Lightfoot antho), and Hunter’s Affects.
All of which means I need to write more stories because I’m running out.
I’ll be at AWP in Kansas City even though I’m not the most social guy, not interested in most of the panels, and don’t know most of the readers. But I will look up some of you indie bastards (lovingly) in the Bookfair, stalk some of the more-”offsite” offsites, and also stand in a very long line to get my Bonnie Jo Campbells signed.
Otherwise, check out the Insta for latest wine picks (and pics) and current reads and etc. Check out Twitter because…I have no idea. Check out the linktree to see what I’m up to all over the web.
Should have another Noir Heroes for you in the not-very-distant future. Any guesses?
