Well, I tried Substack before, kinda liked it, but then retreated from social media for a good long while to figure out how much of it I wanted in my life. The answer was “less,” but I still need a place to tell people where to find my writing. So, since trying it on my own domain didn’t draw any new readers, maybe I’ll find some here.
By the way: the list for most of my stories, along with links to where you can buy the books, is at https://linktr.ee/anthonyneilsmith.
What’s going on: My story “The Ticks Will Eat You Whole” (published in one of my dream journals, Cowboy Jamboree) is featured in Best American Mystery and Suspense 2023. I’ve had a lot of stories accepted and published by a slew of great journals (check the Linktree), with more to come in Bull: Men’s Fiction, The Gorko Gazette, Black Sheep, A Thin Slice of Anxiety (again! And it posted while I was typing this), Sundown (A Gordon Lightfoot Anthology), Red-Headed Writing (A Willie Nelson Anthology), and Muleskinner Journal (who accepted the story, I swear, five minutes ago). Pretty good, eh?
Not to mention (as I mention it) the new column in Poverty House called “Cheap Wine & Cheaper Words.”
I recently finished the second draft of Slowest Bear and sent it to The Boss at Fahrenheit. Crossing fingers it’s up to previous standards.
I’m working on something, which feels suspiciously like a novel. Who knows?
The great Sheldon Lee Compton (now of Poverty House) bestowed his former lit journal Revolution John upon my shoulders, and I’m deeply grateful. I’m very much enjoying the work people have been sending my way.
I did not think this post was going to be this long.
I’m sure I’ll have more soon. Thanks for showing up! There is no happy hour because the drinks are always dirt cheap and fake anyway.
