Thrilled to once again grace the pages of Brandon Barrows’ pulpfest Guilty Crime Stories Magazine for the 11th issue - a detective annual! The story is “Mapache,” which is the Spanish word for raccoon. It introduces a character I think I’d like to write more about, a convict named Arturo, nicknamed Mapache, who ends up pressured to solve a murder in prison no one wants solved, not even the person who asked him to. I hope you’ll give it a shot. It’s a cheap Kindle buy, or the paperback is less than most newsstand mags anymore.
Arturo first showed up as a supporting character in another story called “A Crime Story About Shit,” which is still seeking a home.
Should see the release of The Hooghly Review issue 3 very soon. This is going to be a massive issue, stuffed full of goodness, including my story “The Blind Girl.”
As it’s National Indie Bookstore day (sigh), my advice is to buy books wherever you can afford to, whatever is best for you, for the best price you can. Never feel pressured to pay more if you don’t have to. And order directly from the publisher (especially indie and small presses) whenever you can.
I’ve been stumbling over quite a bumper crop of new exploitation and vintage crime flicks on blu ray, which are really revving up my writing engine. Recently saw Violent Streets and was blown away. I also just picked up a trio of French-sploitation (?) revenge movies from Fun City Editions.
Add those to the stew of Lowdown Road, LaBrava, and The Last King of California in my head right now, and you’ve got a prof about to go on Summer vacay and write at a frighteningly fast pace for the next few months.
Yes, I was able to reach an agreement with my former publisher over the rights of Trooper Down! I appreciate them working with me, and I now have the rights back. I’m looking for a new home for the thing. Already in the hands of a few editors, querying a few others. We’ll see what happens.
And yes, there will be another Slow Bear coming soonish/this yearish from Fahrenheit Press. Of course it’s called Slowest Bear.
And, in even more astounding news, you should (fingers crossed) be able to finally read Murderapolis later this year as well.
And next Spring, my story collection The Ticks will Eat You Whole from the madman Van Winkle at Cowboy Jamboree Press.
Can you believe this shit?
You should also read Ray Banks’ new Substack about cinema, Under the Influence. Banks is a one-of-a-kind writer, one-of-a-kind mind, and the intellectual equivalent of a pub brawl amongst philosophers.

Sounds like some great times ahead for you and your fans!
Glad to hear that Trooper Down! is out of limbo. It's a good one.
